2013 Georgia K-12 Grade Level Championships

  • K-12 tournament for State Champion title for each grade
  • Volunteer parent/coach may register one child for free. Must commit to all day and arrive early. You will need a code. Email webteam@georgiachess.org to get it. Specify which tournament.

2013 Georgia K-12 Grade Level Championships

Who: open to all Georgia students in grades K-12th with a USCF membership.


Sections: 13 Sections (one for each grade) K-12th grade.  Your child MUST register to play in his/her grade. Please read carefully below as the schedules for K-8 and High School differ.


Entry fee:  $25 (online only)


Registration for all: Online registration until midnight, Wednesday, October 30th. There is no on-site registration.

Format for Grades K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th:

5 round, Rated, Swiss-Style tournament, 25 minutes per player with a 5 sec delay as the time control.  (G25/d5).

Sections may be combined if there are not enough players in one section.


Schedule for K-8th graders: 10:00 - 11:30 -1:00 – 2:30 – 4:00


Byes for K-8th graders: You may take up to 2 byes. Byes taken during rounds 1-4 are ½ point byes.  A bye taken in the 5th round is a zero point bye. (you may not take 2 byes in rounds 1-4 and one bye in round 5 – that is 3 byes even though the last round is zero pts)


Prizes for K-8th graders: Trophies to all who score 3.0 or better, minimum 3 trophies per section. Ribbons to all players. $100 stipend to 1st place winner of each section to attend the 2013 National K-12 Grade Championships in Florida (Dec.13-15)*

Format for Grades 9-12th: 4 round, rated, Swiss-Style, G45/d5 (45 min per player w/5 sec delay)


Schedule for grades 9-12th: 10:00 – 11:45 – 1:30 – 3:15


Byes for 9-12th graders: You may take 1 bye. Only zero point byes are available in all rounds.


Prizes for grades 9-12th: Plaques to 1st place, ribbons to all players. $100 stipend to 1st place winner of each grade to attend the 2013 National K-12 Grade Championships in Florida (Dec.13-15)*.


Note to HS – Sections may be combined.  Manual pairings will be used to pair players within their own grade to the extent possible. (Section Chief – Thad Rogers). You will be in a separate room from the main tournament hall.

Award ceremonies will be ASAP after last round ends for both K-8 & 9-12 grades. 1st round pairings will be posted by 9:15am.  No changes can be made after pairings are up for the first round.  It is the parent's responsibility to arrive early enough to verify that the information is correct or to have errors fixed before Round 1 begins.  We will post registration updates on the website but the FINAL registration list will be posted at the tournament.  Accelerated pairings may be used at the TD’s discretion.


Please note: USCF membership required. Sets and boards supplied. Bring your chess clock.  If one player brings a clock and requests its use both players must use the clock.

*1st place winners must attend National Grade Levels to receive the $100 stipend.

GPS tip: please note that the school is located at 170 Russell Rd NE. Without using NE in the address, your GPS might guide you in the opposite direction on Russell Rd. This tip works for GPS (not map quest)
