This is a USCF rated tournament.


Where: Collins Hill High School, 50 Taylor Road, Suwanee, GA 30024-3695

 

When: Sunday, April 14, 2019. Arrive by 9:00 AM to play, 8:30 AM to check the pre-registration list.

 

Four sections:

       Middle School (6th – 8th grade)

       K-5 (Kindergarten – 5th grade)

       K-3 (Kindergarten – 3rd grade)

       K-1 (Kindergarten – 1st grade)

 

Players MUST play in a section that they qualify for by their grade. “Playing up” i.e. a 5th grader playing in the Middle School section is not allowed. Exceptions to this eligibility rule may only be granted by the Chief Tournament Director. If you feel your school absolutely needs an exception to this rule email the Chief TD at dhater1@aol.com no later than April 11, 2019 (earlier is better). Answers will be provided within 72 hours of appeal or no later than April 12, 2019, and a list of exceptions granted will be posted on the GCA website by April 13, 2019. Format:

Middle School (6-8), K-5, and K-3 Sections: Five rounds, rated, individually paired Swiss System tournament with a time control of 25 minutes per player with a five second time delay (G/25; d5). Unless byes are requested, each player will play all rounds (this is not an elimination tournament).

Round Times: 5 Rounds: 9:30AM, 11:00AM, 12:30PM, 2:00PM, 3:30PM

Byes: All requested byes are zero-points. Maximum two byes. In order to request a bye after registration, but prior to 7 AM on April 14th, please send an email to: k8statechamp@georgiachess.org.

 

K-1 section: Four rounds, rated, individually paired Swiss System tournament with a time control of 25 minutes per player with a five second time delay (G/25; d5). Unless byes are requested, each player will play all rounds (this is not an elimination tournament).

Round Times: 4 Rounds: 9:30AM, 11:00AM, 12:30PM, 2:00PM

Byes: All requested byes are zero-points. Maximum one bye. Must declare during registration or by April 14th, 7AM. In order to request a bye after registration, but prior to 7 AM on April 14th, please send an email to: k8statechamp@georgiachess.org.


Withdrawals: You must notify a tournament director as soon as possible if you must withdraw or miss a round.


Morning Schedule:

8:15AM- 8:45AM: Players, parents, and coaches settle in skittles room(s).

8:45AM- 9:00AM: Pairing Notifications and pairing sheets taped beneath section headings and wallcharts

9:00AM-9:20AM: Players to their board in the tournament room. Parents and coaches welcome.

9:20AM-9:30AM: Tournament announcements. Parents and coaches welcome.

9:30AM: Round 1 begins for all sections. Parents and coaches return to the skittles room(s).


Registration and Entry Fee: Entry fee is payable online. To register multiple players, click 'add a guest' after completing the form for the first player. This way you can make one payment for all your players. We will automatically change entry fee on the following schedule:

Entry Until 04/08/19: $30/player

Entry Until 04/09/19: $40/player

Entry Until 04/11/19: $60/player


Online registration will be closed automatically on Thursday April 11, 11:59 pm EST (1 minute before midnight). On-site registrations will not be accepted. No changes (except withdrawals) allowed via email on tournament day due to the size of the tournament. The registration deadline is firm for all players (even if you are requesting an exception for your player).


Teams: Minimum of 3 players in the same section to qualify as a team. Teams may consist of many players, but only the top 5 scores count toward overall team score for the K-3, K-5 and 6-8 sections. For K-1 section top 4 scores count towards overall team score. Homeschooled students may form a team if they study at least two core academic subjects through their home school group or cooperative.


Note: Advanced entry lists will be posted online and will be updated periodically. A final registration list will be posted in the tournament hall by 8:30 AM. These will show the players, sections, teams, and requested byes. It is your responsibility to check the online and onsite list to inform us of any errors. We will pair round one promptly at 8:45AM.

Awards: Awards ceremony ASAP after completion of the last round. Ribbons to all participants. (No individual trophies.) Team place trophies to top teams in each section. Plus score trophies will be awarded to all school teams with plus scores. County trophy to top teams with plus scores from each county within the state of GA.


Eligibility and Special Notes:

The annual GCA K-8 State Championship event is open to any public, private or home schooled student from kindergarten to 8th grade in the state of Georgia.  All players must attend a school or live in GA. If you see a registered player who does not live in Georgia or does not attend school in Georgia, or is assigned to the wrong school team, please bring it our attention ASAP, preferably before the tournament starts. There will be about 600 players at this event, and it is your responsibility to arrive early enough to have any first round issues reported before we begin pairing round one at 8:45AM. If a player doesn't show up for a round and does not have a requested bye, that player will be withdrawn from the tournament. If you cannot attend rounds as expected and must leave the event, you must let a tournament director know immediately.


Photos: We will be taking photos of the chess players for possible publication on our

website. Please email us if you do not want your child's photo used.


Venue Information:

Bring your gadgets fully charged and your own wi-fi hotspot if needed. Sets and boards

supplied. Please bring clocks if you have them.


There are three parking areas; the largest is behind the school.


There are a limited number of team rooms available for $250 each. Please email

k8statechamp@georgiachess.org for payment information and to reserve a room for

your school.
